The Austin Public Library – Willie Mae Kirk Branch, formerly known as the Oak Springs Branch, opened its doors under its new name in October 2012. This renaming was a tribute to Kirk’s tireless work in education and civil rights. She believed in the worth and dignity of every individual. She also firmly believed that if you have anything at all, you have something to share. These principles guided her throughout her life.
Kirk was an educator for decades, retiring in 1982. She was instrumental in integrating public facilities in Austin during the 1960s. As a co-founder of the Mothers Action Council, she led demonstrations and collaborated with community leaders to promote social justice. Her commitment extended beyond education. She played a crucial role in saving the George Washington Carver Library, Austin’s first branch library, from demolition. She spearheaded fundraising efforts and supported a bond initiative that ensured its survival.
Kirk’s dedication to her community was unwavering. She served on Austin’s first Human Rights Commission and an ad hoc committee addressing racial tensions. Mayor Jeffrey Friedman appointed her to the Library Commission in 1971. Her impact resonated throughout numerous organizations, including Huston-Tillotson University, the NAACP, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and The Links, Inc.
