This isn’t just a coincidence. The park’s name directly reflects its location. Originally, the land belonged to the Board of Education. They had plans for a school. But in 1965, the community’s need for recreation prompted the Chicago Park District to lease the land. They started developing the area into a park. For about 25 years, it remained an unofficial park without a formal name. Most maps didn’t even acknowledge its existence. Then in 1991, the land was officially transferred to the Chicago Park District. This marked a turning point for Austin-Foster Park. The park district planted trees and installed a new playground. Finally, in 1993, it received its official designation as Austin-Foster Park, a name already familiar to local residents. Today, Austin-Foster Park covers nearly five acres. It boasts a junior baseball field, a softball field, and a modern playground. The playground, renovated in 2016, features a soft, engineered wood fiber surface. It’s designed to be accessible to everyone. Within the park, you’ll find plenty of equipment for children of all ages. There are swings, slides, climbing structures, and even musical instruments like bongo drums. Benches, a drinking fountain, and a picnic table provide spots for relaxation and refreshment. While the park’s location near Foster Avenue means some street noise, it remains a popular neighborhood spot. Austin-Foster Park provides a welcome green space in the city.
