Wollfgang’s adventurous spirit buzzed with anticipation. Today, he would finally visit the Aussichtsturm Tidepolder on Luneplate. His sister, Wollke, shared his enthusiasm. Unlike their apprehensive friend, Wollerie, they weren’t fazed by the Aussichtsturm Tidepolder’s height. A mere 8.30 meters? A piece of cake! They hopped on a bus to Bremerhaven-Bohmsiel, the starting point of their Luneplate adventure. Luneplate, a former island in the Weser River, had a rich history. Diked in 1924, the island became mainland, separated from the main Weser flow. The newly acquired land was then intensively farmed. However, in 2003, Luneplate underwent a dramatic transformation. To offset the expansion of Bremerhaven’s container terminal, Luneplate was renatured. By January 2010, coinciding with its incorporation into Bremerhaven, it was declared a nature reserve. The city invested a substantial 25 million Euros in acquiring Luneplate. An additional 900,000 Euros funded tourist facilities like the Aussichtsturm Tidepolder, pavilions, and a birdwatching station near the dike. Reaching the Aussichtsturm Tidepolder, they paused. From this vantage point, they absorbed the panoramic view of the revitalized landscape. They observed the diverse birdlife thriving in the Tidepolder, a unique wetland ecosystem experiencing the ebb and flow of the tides even behind the dike. The rhythmic pulse of nature, once disrupted by intensive agriculture, was now restored. This created a haven for countless birds. They reflected on the foresight and investment that brought this tranquil space to life. The Aussichtsturm Tidepolder wasn’t just a viewpoint; it was a symbol of Bremerhaven’s commitment to balance progress with preservation.
