Imagine the echoes of hymns resonating through the air. This is the Augustinerkirche. It stands as a testament to Mainz’s rich religious and artistic history. Built between 1768 and 1771 the Augustinerkirche replaced a Gothic church from 1260. Augustinian hermits constructed both churches. They remained here until 1803.

Now look at the church’s exterior. Notice the vibrant Baroque style. Despite its late construction, it is very much associated with the baroque style. See the statues above the portal crafted by Nikolaus Binterim. They depict the Coronation of Mary Queen of Heaven. Augustine of Hippo and his mother Monica of Hippo flank her. They are the patron saint and ruler of the Augustinian order.

Now let’s talk about the history of the Augustinerkirche. After secularization in 1803 the building became a seminary in 1805. The church remarkably survived World War II. It is a testament to its solid construction.

As you step inside the Augustinerkirche, the Rococo style envelops you. The fusion of the nave and choir is a typical element of the Rococo style. The altars showcase Rococo artistry. Yet hints of Classicism are also visible.

Above gaze at the ceiling paintings by Johann Baptist Enderle. They were created in 1772. These bright frescoes glorify the life of Augustine. The furnishings make a very rich impression through the large altars.

Now turn your attention to the wood sculpture of Mary with the Child Jesus. It dates back to 1420. It was moved here in 1807 from the demolished Liebfrauenkirche. Notice the serene expressions. It is a beautiful example of Gothic art.

A special feature of the Augustinerkirche is the pipe organ. Johann Heinrich Stumm built it in 1773. It is one of the few surviving instruments from the Stumm dynasty. This baroque organ has largely been preserved in its original form.

The Augustinerkirche stands as more than just a church. It is a symbol of Mainz’s resilience. It embodies artistic grandeur and spiritual continuity. Its walls whisper tales of faith and artistry. The Augustinerkirche stands as a beacon of history for all to admire.
