“A church for the Swedish and Lutheran immigrants.” That’s how the Augustana Lutheran Church was often described in its early days. The Augustana Lutheran Church stands before you as a testament to the faith and perseverance of those early settlers. Established on April 16, 1866, the Augustana Lutheran Church quickly became a spiritual anchor for the burgeoning Scandinavian community in Minneapolis. Their journey began much earlier though, with small gatherings in homes as early as 1857. The desire for a dedicated space led them to Chutes schoolhouse and the home of C.G. Vannstrom, where they found solace in shared faith and language. The year 1866 marked a turning point. The congregation, led by the resolute Reverend E. Norelius, secured a place of worship at Dr. Knickerbacker’s church on Hennepin and Fourth St. With the purchase of land at Washington and 13th Ave., their vision of a permanent home began to materialize. While their Gothic-style church was under construction, the congregation found temporary refuge in Kinckerbacker’s schoolhouse. This era saw the church embrace both Swedish and Norwegian members, fostering a sense of unity amongst the Scandinavian community. However, in May 1868, the Norwegian members followed a different path, establishing Trinity Church at 9th Ave and 20th St. The Augustana Lutheran Church continued to flourish. In 1883, they moved to their new home at 7th Street and 11th Avenue South. This church, a beacon of faith, witnessed not only their growth but also the birth of several daughter congregations. Bethlehem Lutheran, Emanuel Lutheran, and Ebenezer Evangelical Lutheran Church are all testaments to the Augustana Lutheran Church’s enduring legacy. The church’s impact extended far beyond its walls. The Augustana Mission Colony, established in 1895, embodied their commitment to serving the community. Providing shelter and care, the colony became a symbol of hope and compassion. As you stand here, consider the echoes of hymns and prayers that once resonated within these walls. The Augustana Lutheran Church embodies a journey of faith, community, and unwavering devotion that continues to inspire generations.
