In 1911, a young artist named August Macke moved into a three-story house at Bornheimer Strasse 88 in Bonn. This wasn’t just any house. It was the August Macke Haus, and it would become a haven for his creativity. Macke, a co-founder of the artist group “Blauer Reiter,” transformed the attic into his first and only studio. The August Macke Haus quickly became a hub for prominent figures in the Rhineland art scene. Artists like Franz Marc, Max Ernst, and Paul Klee were frequent visitors. Imagine the lively discussions and creative exchanges that must have filled these walls. Macke’s time at the August Macke Haus was incredibly productive. He completed over 400 paintings, often drawing inspiration from his surroundings. The view from the house, the nearby streets, and the garden all found their way onto his canvases. One of the most remarkable creations born within the August Macke Haus is the mural “Paradise.” Macke and Franz Marc painted this large-scale work together directly on the studio wall. It’s a testament to their shared artistic vision and close friendship. Sadly, Macke’s life was cut short in 1914 when he was killed in action during World War I. He was only 27 years old. His widow, Elisabeth, later married his friend, Lothar Erdmann. They continued to live in the August Macke Haus until 1925, keeping Macke’s artistic spirit alive within its walls. Today, the August Macke Haus stands as a museum dedicated to the artist’s life and work. You can explore the restored studio, complete with furniture from Macke’s time, and see a replica of the “Paradise” mural. The museum also houses temporary exhibitions, often focusing on Expressionism, and offers a glimpse into the vibrant artistic community that once thrived within the August Macke Haus.
