“A shattered foundation, a silent testament.” These are the words that echoed in my mind as we approached the Aufseherhaus in Kassel’s magnificent Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. The Aufseherhaus, or “Overseer’s House,” once stood proudly amidst the vibrant life of the Fasanerie, the park’s pheasantry. Today, only its foundations remain, a poignant reminder of its fate during World War II. The Aufseherhaus was constructed around 1791. It served as the residence for the overseer of the pheasantry, a vital role in maintaining this lively part of the park. Imagine the bustling activity, the vibrant plumage of the pheasants, and the watchful eye of the overseer from his house. This tranquil scene was forever altered during the war when the Aufseherhaus was tragically destroyed. The destruction left behind only the stone foundations, now overtaken by nature. Yet, even in ruins, the Aufseherhaus tells a story. It speaks of a time of elegance and extravagance, when the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe flourished under the patronage of its creators. It whispers of the devastating impact of war, a stark contrast to the beauty that surrounds it. The surviving foundation of the Aufseherhaus offers a tangible connection to the past. It invites us to reflect on the ephemeral nature of human creations and the enduring power of nature. As we gaze upon these remnants, we can almost hear the echoes of the past, a reminder of the rich history that shaped this remarkable park.
