Envision a giant blue moon. It hangs suspended in the air, seemingly defying gravity. This is the Aufgehender Mond sculpture in Bremen. It’s a striking piece of art. The Aufgehender Mond translates to “rising moon”. It dominates the space in front of the former post office near Bremen’s main train station. The Aufgehender Mond was created in 1990 by Linz-based architect Manfred Ortner. He collaborated with the Austrian art group Haus-Rucker-Co. The sculpture’s massive disc spans an impressive nine meters in diameter. It’s made of plastic. Long supports crafted from galvanized steel pipes hold the moon aloft. A seemingly random telephone booth stands next to the sculpture. This isn’t an accident. It’s an intentional part of the artwork. At night, the Aufgehender Mond truly comes alive. The disc is illuminated from below. This creates a glowing orb. It mimics the brilliance of a real moon in the night sky. Originally, the Aufgehender Mond was located on Gustav-Deetjen-Allee at the corner of An der Weide. It remained there until 2000. It was then moved to its current location. It continues to captivate viewers with its unique blend of art and architecture.
