A modern hexagon. That’s the first impression of the Auferstehungskirche. Its white facade gleams in the sunlight. This striking church in Bremerhaven’s Surheide district wasn’t always here.
The Auferstehungskirche stands as a testament to the resilient spirit of a community. Surheide itself only emerged in 1937. It quickly grew exceeding 3000 inhabitants. Yet ironically the Nazi regime’s anti-church sentiment prevented initial plans for a church building. Early Surheide residents relied on the parish in Geestemünde for religious services.
The 1950s saw Surheide become a self-governing part of the St Martins community in Schiffdorf. A crucial turning point arrived with the 1957 construction of a kindergarten. It also doubled as a temporary meeting place for the growing congregation. A nurse’s station was even located within its walls. The building’s dual use demonstrates the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the community.
Further growth led to Surheide’s independence. Between 1967 and 1968 the Auferstehungskirche’s construction began. Karl Franzius a local Bremerhaven architect designed the unique hexagonal structure. A year later the parish house was built. Finally on January 1 1969 the Auferstehungskirche congregation was officially established with its own pastor.
The Auferstehungskirche boasts several notable features. Its asymmetric roofline is striking. A striking brick relief of Christ as the ruler of the world adorns the altar wall. The non-representational stained-glass windows add a modern artistic touch. The church tower another marvel of architecture is made from white facing brick. It stands proudly on a steel frame with a copper-clad spire. An open gallery cleverly connects the tower with the church.
Gerhard Olbrich a local artist enhanced the Auferstehungskirche’s interior. His unique style shaped the altar table made of granite. His work is apparent in the steel pipe pulpit with aluminum panels. The baptismal font a steel pipe frame with a six-sided granite top is also his creation. The metallic baptismal bowl has a matching cover.
The Auferstehungskirche continues to be a vital part of Surheide’s community. It is a hub for spiritual activities and a testament to the community’s enduring faith. The church’s story echoes the resilience of its people. Their dedication built this remarkable place of worship. It continues to serve the community nearly six decades later.
