The Auferstehungskirche is an Evangelical Lutheran church. You can find it in the Marli district of Lübeck-St. Gertrud. Its construction took place between 1968 and 1970.
Originally, the area was part of St. Thomas parish. In 1963, the Auferstehung congregation emerged from St. Thomas’ third parish district. The new development near Wesloer Bridge grew larger than planned. So, the church leadership decided to establish the independent Auferstehung congregation on October 1, 1963. Initially, only a parsonage with a classroom and community hall was planned for the district.
On January 1, 2022, the Auferstehungskirche, St. Thomas, and St. Philippus merged. They formed the Evangelical Lutheran Church Community of Marli-Brandenbaum Lübeck.
Construction began five years after the congregation’s founding. The foundation stone was laid on Eternity Sunday in 1968. Senior Karlheinz Stoll consecrated the church two years later. The date was November 29, 1970.
Heinz Bahr, an architect from Lübeck, designed the entire building. This included the church, kindergarten, and staff apartments. Due to the hillside location, the church was planned with two stories. The freestanding bell tower is a distinctive feature. It is visible from afar. In 1992, the silversmith Werner Oehlschlaeger created the bronze altar cross. It was hung the same year.
In 1980, the Hillebrand company from Isernhagen built the organ. Before that, the church had a portable organ. It was originally built for the community hall.
Three bells hang in the tower. Karl Stumpf cast them all in 1970. He used the Karlsruhe bell foundry. The bell arrangement is unique. The tones create a melancholic effect. The tower’s acoustics enhance this effect.
The Auferstehungskirche also has a kindergarten. It has been at the location since 1971. It is in the basement of the church. Over the years, the daycare center became very popular. This was to create space for nursery places. It was completed and consecrated in May 2013. A jury of architects recognized it as one of the special new buildings of the year.
