Could this tranquil lake have once been a gravel pit? Here at the Auensee, it’s hard to imagine. The Auensee is nestled within Leipzig’s Auenwald floodplain forest. It’s a unique blend of city life and nature. The Auensee’s story begins in 1910. It was created as a gravel pit to source materials for the construction of Leipzig Central Station. Imagine the hustle and bustle as workers extracted the gravel. This gravel then journeyed to the heart of Leipzig to build the grand station. In 1912, the area transformed again. The Auensee became the heart of Luna Park, a vibrant amusement park. Imagine a roller coaster against an alpine backdrop, a hippodrome, and a gondola station. Picture the Lunabahn circling the lake, a music pavilion filling the air with melodies, and restaurants and dance palaces buzzing with activity. The Auensee was a popular destination for Leipzig residents. By the late 1920s, Luna Park’s allure faded, and establishments closed. In 1941, the city of Leipzig took ownership and reshaped the area. Today, the amusement park is gone. But the Auensee remains a place of entertainment and natural beauty. Haus Auensee hosts concerts. A playground in the eastern part delights children. The historic Parkeisenbahn, or park railway, circles the lake. This railway, opened in 1951 as the “Pioniereisenbahn,” is one of the children’s railways from the former Eastern Bloc countries. The Auensee offers diverse experiences. From its industrial beginnings to its amusement park days, the Auensee has evolved. Now, it’s a serene escape within the city, a testament to Leipzig’s ever-changing landscape.
