Designed by Renzo Piano the Auditorium Gianni Agnelli stands as a testament to Turin’s blend of industrial history and cultural innovation. This concert hall is located in the Lingotto complex. Lingotto was once a Fiat factory. Now it is a multifunctional space. The Auditorium Gianni Agnelli is named after the founder of Fiat.

Imagine this factory transformed into a space for music. It is an amazing reuse of industrial space. Cesare Romiti a FIAT executive had the idea for a concert hall. It was after a successful concert in 1990. Claudio Abbado conducted the concert. The success inspired Romiti. He wanted a permanent concert hall.

Piano enlisted Helmut Müller. Müller was an acoustics expert. Together they created a space with excellent sound. The Auditorium Gianni Agnelli was completed in 1994. The Berliner Philharmoniker performed at the opening. Abbado conducted. They played Mahler’s Symphony No. 9. This marked the beginning of the Lingotto Congress Centre.

The hall’s interior is paneled in cherry wood. This choice ensures perfect acoustics. The Auditorium Gianni Agnelli seats 1900 people. The seats are distributed among the stalls, side boxes and choir. The space extends ten meters below ground level.

The Auditorium Gianni Agnelli hosts diverse events. It is a venue for classical music concerts. It also hosts conferences. The Salone Internazionale del Libro uses it for events. The MITO Settembre Musica festival holds performances here.

Francesca Gentile Camerana and Filippo Beraudo di Pralormo founded Lingotto Musica in 1997. This association manages events within the Auditorium Gianni Agnelli. In 1999, they launched “Giovani per i giovani”. This chamber music series showcased young talent. It later became “Lingotto Giovani”. It featured winners of prestigious instrumental competitions.

The Auditorium Gianni Agnelli is adaptable. It can be divided into smaller rooms. Movable walls allow for this flexibility. The hall stands on the old Fiat assembly line.

Key figures have shaped the Auditorium Gianni Agnelli. Filippo Beraudo di Pralormo was president. Francesca Gentile Camerana was artistic director until 2022. Luca Mortarotti is the current artistic director.

The Auditorium Gianni Agnelli hosted the opening of the 34th Torino Film Festival in 2016. This shows its importance to Turin’s cultural scene.
