On a hill overlooking Māngere Bridge, stands Auckland Seventh-Day Adventist High School (ASDAH). It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the Seventh-day Adventist commitment to education, a value woven into their global network of schools. ASDAH is part of this impressive system, the second largest Christian school system worldwide. Established in 1970, Auckland Seventh-Day Adventist High School opened its doors as one of nearly 5,000 Adventist schools globally. The school, located on Mountain Road in Māngere Bridge, Auckland, serves students from years 9-13. ASDAH’s motto, “Commitment and Excellence,” reflects its dedication to providing a quality Christian education.

Auckland Seventh-Day Adventist High School’s vision is clear: “Building a Nation Through Quality Christian Education.” Academics, faith, and well-being are the pillars of the ASDAH experience. The school strives to nurture students into leading voices in their communities. The leadership team, including Principal Gloria Teulilo and Deputy Principals Jessie Fuamatu and Lorraine Covenden, guide the school towards this vision. ASDAH is a state-integrated school. This means it receives government funding while maintaining its special character as a Christian institution. Enrolment prioritizes families connected to the Seventh-day Adventist Church. However, non-preference students may be enrolled if space allows and the school’s special character is not compromised.

ASDAH has faced challenges and celebrated triumphs. An Education Review Office report in 2007 highlighted areas for improvement in school management and governance. A Limited Statutory Manager was subsequently appointed to address these issues. Yet, by 2016, the school had made significant strides. An ERO report commended ASDAH’s responsiveness to Māori and other students needing learning support. The report also noted the positive impact of strong teacher-student relationships on academic achievement. In recent years, ASDAH has demonstrated academic success, particularly in NCEA Levels 1 and 2. Student achievement in these levels has surpassed both the averages for similar socio-economic decile schools and the national average. The school’s predominantly Tongan and Cook Island Māori student body contributes to its unique cultural richness. Auckland Seventh-Day Adventist High School continues to grow and evolve, shaping young minds and preparing them for a future of service and leadership. It’s a place where faith and learning intertwine, where students are encouraged to reach their full potential, and where the community thrives.
