Clutching a first edition of “The Faerie Queene,” I stumbled upon the Auckland Central City Library. It wasn’t the sleek marble exterior that caught my eye, but the story echoing within. The Auckland Central City Library isn’t just a building. It’s a phoenix, risen from the ashes of a dilapidated predecessor on Wellesley Street. Originally sharing space with the Auckland Art Gallery in a building opened in 1887, the library quickly outgrew its confines. By 1953, the library held 80,000 volumes, threatening to bring the building down. A new site was chosen, a triangle formed by Lorne, Rutland, and Wellesley Streets. The Auckland Savings Bank offered a low-rate loan, a gift to the city. This spurred the project forward. Architects journeyed overseas, seeking inspiration. Construction began in 1967. The building, clad in white Carrera and Travertine marble, opened in 1971. The Auckland Central City Library was designed as a “supermarket style” library. It moved away from the hushed, institutional atmosphere of traditional libraries. The Auckland Central City Library even had a smoking room. This modern approach sometimes led to unexpected events. A discarded cigarette once ignited a wastepaper basket, leading a panicked patron to raise a false alarm. The library has continued to evolve. The Whare Wānanga was added. A cafe appeared. The first-floor balcony was enclosed. Today, the Auckland Central City Library holds a treasure trove, including a Shakespeare First Folio and the original score of “God Defend New Zealand.” It’s more than a library. It’s a living testament to the power of knowledge and the enduring spirit of Auckland.
