Here stands the Au Sergent Blandan Statue a poignant reminder of a complex past. This isn’t just a statue it’s a story etched in bronze and later stone. Originally cast in bronze in 1900 the statue honored Sergeant Blandan a Lyonnais soldier who died in Algeria in 1842. He was a hero to some a symbol of bravery and sacrifice. His statue stood proudly on Place Sathonay.

The story takes a turn during World War II. Under the Vichy regime the bronze statue was melted down its metal repurposed for the war effort. This wasn’t merely a loss of art it was the erasure of a symbol a collective memory.

But the story doesn’t end there. In 1962 a new statue was unveiled. This time it was carved from stone. Created by sculptors Lapandery and Tajana it replaced the lost bronze figure. Interestingly the new stone statue differed slightly from its predecessor. Sergeant Blandan no longer held a rifle the symbol of his military prowess. This subtle change reflects a shifting perspective on his legacy.

The Au Sergent Blandan Statue now stands as a testament to both the enduring power of memory and the ever-evolving interpretation of history. It’s a silent observer of Lyon’s transformations a reminder that heroes and their stories are often multifaceted and prone to reinterpretation as time marches on. More than a monument it’s a conversation a complex narrative about colonialism courage and the ever-changing landscape of public memory. The inscription on its base Nous rendre jamais still echoes but what does it truly mean today? What is your own interpretation of this multifaceted monument?
