Rolling hills stretch as far as the eye can see. Welcome to Atwima-Mponua District. This southwestern corner of the Ashanti Region holds a rich history.

Atwima-Mponua District is one of Ghana’s 261 districts. It’s part of the Ashanti Region’s 43 districts. Nyinahin serves as its administrative capital. This district covers a vast area. It measures approximately 1883.2 square kilometers. That’s a considerable expanse of land.

The district boasts a diverse landscape. Undulating hills meet fertile plains. The average elevation is 76 meters above sea level. Rivers Offin and Tano flow through the land. They offer irrigation potential especially near Adiembra.

Atwima-Mponua’s climate is ideal for agriculture. Two main rainfall seasons provide ample water. The major season runs from March to July peaking in May. Annual rainfall averages 170 to 185 centimeters. A smaller season follows in August lasting until November. This season brings 100 to 125 centimeters of rain. Temperatures hover around a pleasant 27 degrees Celsius.

The vegetation is semi-deciduous. A variety of trees thrive. They include valuable timber like wawa sapele esa and asafena. Four forest reserves protect these resources. They are Asanayo Gyemara and the Tano-Offin reserves. Sadly human activity has impacted the forests. Replanting efforts are underway.

The soil is fertile supporting various crops. Cocoa cola oil palm maize cocoyam plantain cassava rice and vegetables are grown. Despite adequate rainfall its unpredictability challenges rain-fed agriculture.

Over 260 farming communities call Atwima-Mponua home. To improve extension services these are grouped into 32 operational areas. Only 14 have agricultural extension agents. Four zones Mpasatia Kwanfifi Nyinahin and Tanodumasi further organize these areas. Each zone has a District Development Officer.

The district’s population in 2021 reached 155254. This includes 80235 males and 75019 females.
