“Did anyone pack their hiking boots?” Attic Hanthana, our next stop, beckons. This isn’t just any chalet. It’s nestled at the foot of the Hanthana Mountain Range, a local favorite just southwest of Kandy. Declared an environmental protection area in 2010, these mountains whisper stories of ancient times and offer breathtaking views.
Although we can’t see them from here, the highest peaks, Katusu Konda and Uragala, rise over 4,000 feet. Imagine sharp cliffs, triangular summits, and slopes so steep they seem impossible to climb. Don’t worry, the peak closest to us, marked by two broadcasting towers, is a much gentler climb. From there, on a clear day, you can see almost all of central Sri Lanka, even the iconic Adam’s Peak.
This area is more than just a pretty face. It’s a haven for over 120 bird species, some found nowhere else in the world. It’s a film location, a hiker’s paradise, and a source of endless inspiration.
