“What if stone could dance with light?” Imagine standing before Atrium Saldanha. This isn’t just another building. It is a statement.
Atrium Saldanha significantly contributed to the regeneration of this area. It also added to the animation of this quarter of Lisbon. This iconic building integrates perfectly within Lisbon’s urban context.
RBTA designed Atrium Saldanha. The design merges classical proportions with high-tech materials. The facades use local Estremoz stone. This enhances the building’s classical composition. A double-skin glass envelope adds a modern touch. The glazed facades accentuate the building’s lightness. They allow maximum natural daylight penetration. This design guarantees energy efficiency and acoustic performance.
The main facade extends in a semicircle over Praça Saldanha. The rear facade overlooks a large atrium. Zenithal light illuminates the atrium. It links the shopping gallery and office floors. This central atrium includes an interior garden. It serves as the building’s animation area.
The interior glazed facade reveals the office area. It is shaped as an inverted cone opening to the light. White marble panels are incorporated at retail levels. Pedestrian access is available through streets like Fernando Lopes and Vieira da Silva.
Offices occupy the top nine floors. They range from 50 to 3700 square meters. Access is provided by four independent lifts. The shopping gallery is on the first three floors. It features 95 stores and a panoramic internal lift. The parking area has two floors for shopping clients. Four levels are reserved for office users.
Atrium Saldanha won several awards. These awards recognize its design quality. They also acknowledge its integration into urban surroundings. Awards include the Prize for Excellence in Integrated Architectural Design and Interior Design. It also won The Best Enterprise of the Year in 1997. Other accolades include the Ambelis Prize 1997. It also received the Secil Prize for Civil Engineering 1999. The Valmor and Municipal Prize for Architecture 2001 completes the recognition.
