Gazing upon the Atik Ali Paşa Medresesi, one can almost hear the echoes of scholars from centuries past. This medrese, a significant part of Atik Ali Paşa’s külliye (complex), stands as a testament to Ottoman educational heritage. Built by Gazi Atik Ali Paşa in 1497, the Atik Ali Paşa Medresesi is nestled along Divanyolu, a historic thoroughfare in Istanbul’s Çemberlitaş district. Today, the tram tracks run remarkably close, almost as if slicing through what was once the heart of the külliye. The mosque and the sıbyan mektebi (primary school) are situated just north of these tracks, highlighting how the modern city has grown around this historical gem. Atik Ali Paşa himself was a prominent figure during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II, serving twice as Grand Vizier. Interestingly, he also has another mosque named after him in Istanbul, showcasing his influence and piety. The Atik Ali Paşa Medresesi was renowned as a prominent educational institution. Even the celebrated Şeyhülislam Zembilli Ali Efendi was educated within its walls. The architect’s name, unfortunately, is lost to time. We do know, however, that the külliye possesses a vakfiye (endowment deed) dating back to 1509, offering a glimpse into the complex’s original intent and scope. The medrese itself boasts a rectangular courtyard, surrounded by rooms that once served as classrooms, a small mosque, and student quarters. The courtyard now lies beneath the current street level. A covered corridor, or revak, encircles this central space, connecting the various rooms. Sixteen student rooms, each with a fireplace, chimney, and dome, lined this corridor. The columns supporting the revak are impressively sturdy. The design of the student room windows features a variety of different sizes and shapes, a subtle detail that adds to the medrese’s charm. The classroom designated for religious instruction and the small mosque share a square layout and are both topped with domes. Sadly, the construction of the tram line in the 1880s resulted in the demolition of four rooms on the front side of the medrese. Historical records reveal fluctuating student numbers over the years. In 1792, there were 24 students. This number rose to 46 in 1869 and 60 by 1914. Interestingly, it’s noted that only 25 of these students resided within the medrese itself. For many years, the Atik Ali Paşa Medresesi served the Teachers’ Union, demonstrating its continued relevance long after its original purpose. The Atik Ali Paşa Medresesi stands as a silent witness to centuries of scholarship, political intrigue, and urban development, whispering its story to those who take the time to listen.
