Contemplating the cosmos, are you? Here at the Astronomi Müzesi, we invite you to explore the universe through the lens of Islamic science.

The Astronomi Müzesi stands as a testament to the significant contributions of Islamic scholars to the field of astronomy. The Islamic Science and Technology History Museum was opened on May 24, 2008. It is similar to the museum that Professor Doctor Fuat SEZGİN opened in 1983 within the Institute of Arab-Islamic Sciences History of Goethe University in Frankfurt.

Inside the Astronomi Müzesi, you’ll discover a treasure trove of knowledge. The museum showcases the inventions, discoveries, and studies made by Islamic scientists between the 9th and 16th centuries. There are 585 tools, device replicas, and models exhibited here. The museum consists of twelve sections. These include Astronomy, Clock & Maritime, War Technology, Medicine, Mining, Physics, Mathematics & Geometry, Architecture & Urbanism, Chemistry & Optics, and Geography.

Astronomy holds a place as one of the oldest sciences. Within this section, miniatures of important observatories from the Islamic period await. Marvel at the intricate designs of astrolabes. Imagine navigating the world with meticulously crafted world globes and measuring sets.

Don’t miss the Clock and Marine Section. It features sun dials that marked time with shadows. See clocks designed by al-Jazari and al-Biruni. Admire the mechanical clocks by Taqial-din. He was one of the most important astronomers of the Ottoman Period. The Andalusian candle clock with twelve doors is a sight to behold.

The Elephant Clock will take you to a journey in time. He designed The Elephant Clock to show his admiration to the Universality of Islam. It spread from Spain to the Middle Asia in that period.

Professor Doctor Fuat Sezgin devoted his life to promoting the History of Science and Technology in Islam. He viewed the developments in science and civilization as interconnected. The museum aims to show the share of the Islamic Cultural Civilization in this heritage. The İstanbul Museum of Islamic Science and Technology History sheds light on the present and the future. It reveals the process in the history of sciences of the Islamic world. It has a special impressive power with the aesthetics and teaching of scientific works.

As you explore the Astronomi Müzesi, consider its role as a bridge. It unites the east-west scientific culture. The museum serves as a reminder of our shared intellectual heritage. It inspires future generations to pursue knowledge.

Before you leave the Astronomi Müzesi, take a moment to reflect on the legacy of Islamic science. Think about how it continues to shape our world.
