Did you know that the Assumption Catholic Church in St Paul Minnesota boasts four bells echoing across downtown? Their resonant tones are a testament to a rich history. This magnificent church wasn’t always here. Its story begins in 1856. Bishop Joseph Cretin established the Church of the Assumption for German immigrants. The first church stood just north of its current location. It was a simpler structure a far cry from the impressive Romanesque masterpiece we see today.

By 1871 the parish outgrew its modest beginnings. A new church was needed. Construction started on the current building. Its architecture the towering twin spires massive stone presence rounded arches and apse over the altar-was inspired by the Ludwigkirche in Munich. German immigrants built this church using Lake Superior limestone. They meticulously recreated the spirit of a European cathedral in the heart of the American Midwest. The design came from Bavarian architect Joseph Reidel court architect for the Wittelsbach family. This explains the church’s remarkable resemblance to its Munich counterpart.

The interior remains largely unchanged since the late 1800s. The statue of Mary on the high altar is from the original church. It’s a tangible link to the Assumption’s earliest days. Imagine the countless prayers and masses witnessed by this revered figure.

Before 1975 the church bells were rung manually using 200-foot ropes. The physical effort involved must have been immense. It serves as a reminder of the devotion and dedication of those who served the Assumption. The Angelus bell survived the transition from the first church to the second. It still rings out calling the faithful to prayer.
