The name “Meinel-Eck” once echoed through the streets. This came from the Meinel family’s music shop, which opened in 1954. The shop occupied a prominent corner building. It became a landmark in the oddly offset intersection. Trams first clattered through these streets in 1887. The tracks looped through Görlitzer Straße, Bischofsweg, and Kamenzer Straße before returning to Markgrafenstraße (now Rothenburger Straße). This created an unusual tram flow that, along with Meinel’s music shop, cemented the corner’s identity. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Dresden’s Neustadt blossomed with a burgeoning nightlife. Assi-Eck became a popular gathering spot, especially after a surveillance camera was installed at nearby Scheunevorplatz in 2008. The area drew crowds, spilling onto the streets.
