Tucked away in the vibrant heart of Rio de Janeiro, the Assembléia de Deus Vitória em Cristo has a story waiting to be discovered. It’s a story of faith, growth, and a touch of political intrigue. Let’s begin our journey right here, in front of this imposing structure. The Assembléia de Deus Vitória em Cristo wasn’t always the name gracing this building. It started its life in 1959 as the Assembleia de Deus da Penha, founded by Pastor José Pimentel de Carvalho in the Penha neighborhood.

The early years saw a few changes in leadership. Pastor Sebastião Ferreira Pinto took the helm in 1962, followed briefly by Pastor Augusto Costa. Then, in 1964, Pastor José Santos stepped in, marking a period of significant growth and stability. Under his guidance, the church expanded to seven congregations. By the time of his passing in 2010, the Assembléia de Deus da Penha boasted 15,000 members and 89 congregations across Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and Pernambuco.

A new chapter began in March 2010 with the arrival of Pastor Silas Malafaia. He inherited a thriving ministry from his father-in-law, Pastor José Santos. Soon after, he changed the church’s name to Assembléia de Deus Vitória em Cristo. This was a strategic move to avoid confusion with the Penha neighborhood as the church continued its expansion. Another significant decision under Malafaia’s leadership was the church’s separation from the Convenção Geral das Assembleias de Deus no Brasil, marking its independence.

Pastor Malafaia had ambitious plans for the Assembléia de Deus Vitória em Cristo. He envisioned growing the church from just over a hundred congregations to more than a thousand across Brazil. This vision propelled a rapid expansion, with a goal of opening 250 new congregations in 2014 alone. This growth culminated in the inauguration of a brand-new, state-of-the-art headquarters in 2014. This impressive structure, right before our eyes, has a seating capacity of 6,000 and cost a staggering R$30 million to build. Its construction took over two years to complete, and the grand opening was a spectacle, attended by 8,000 people.

The Assembléia de Deus Vitória em Cristo has a strong presence in the community. It is one of the organizers of the Marcha para Jesus in Rio de Janeiro. This annual event draws an estimated 600,000 people. The church also actively participates in politics, endorsing candidates and advocating for Christian values in the political sphere.

Today, the Assembléia de Deus Vitória em Cristo stands as a testament to its enduring faith and its commitment to growth. From its humble beginnings in Penha to its current status as a major evangelical force in Brazil, this church continues to evolve and impact the lives of countless individuals.
