Founded in 1922 the Asociacion Evangelica’s story began in Concordia and San Antonio. German immigrants from the Volga region arrived in Argentina after the Russian Revolution. They sought a new religious home. Their pietistic Reformed background led them to establish a new denomination. Initially called the Evangelical Free Congregation it later became the German Evangelical Religious Society. They faced challenges adjusting to the existing Lutheran churches. They reached out to Congregationalist churches in the USA for support.
The Asociacion Evangelica’s growth was remarkable. Carlos Holzer a pastor sent from the United States became their first ordained leader. On June 24 1924 the congregation officially adopted the name Evangelical Congregational Church in Argentina. New congregations quickly sprang up in Irazusta Urdinarrain Villa Mantero Almada and Costa San Antonio.
The Asociacion Evangelica’s influence spread throughout Argentina. Its presence is felt in Entre Rios Misiones Chaco Formosa Cordoba Buenos Aires and Santa Fe. In 2004 the denomination boasted 20000 members across 130 congregations and 30 house fellowships. They adhere to the Heidelberg Catechism and Luther’s Small Catechism. They are also part of the World Communion of Reformed Churches.
