“A nest overlooking the Bosphorus” whispered the wind. That’s what the name Aşiyan means in Persian. And here we stand before the Aşiyan Museum. This isn’t just a building. It’s a poem etched in wood and stone. It’s the legacy of Tevfik Fikret one of Turkey’s most celebrated poets.

For nine years this three-story house nestled on Aşiyan Street in Istanbul’s Bebek district was his home. He designed it himself in 1905 completing it the following year. His refined taste is evident in every detail. The house was more than just a dwelling. It was his sanctuary his creative haven.

Here in the Aşiyan Museum you can walk in his footsteps. You can see his study exactly as he left it. His writing desk still stands. His armchair waits patiently. His self-portrait hangs on the wall a silent observer of time’s passage. Even his death mask created by the renowned painter Mihri Müfik Hanım is displayed here. This mask is the first scientifically prepared mask in Turkey. A truly unique piece of art.

The museum is more than just Tevfik Fikret’s story. Other rooms showcase the works of other important literary figures such as Abdülhak Hamit Tarhan and Nigar Hanım. Paintings photographs and personal belongings offer glimpses into their lives and creative processes. The collection includes paintings inspired by Fikret’s own poems showcasing the interplay between art and literature.

The garden is special too. This is where Tevfik Fikret’s final resting place lies. Although he wished to be buried here it took 46 years after his death for his wish to be granted. His grave is a poignant reminder of the poet’s enduring connection to this place.

The Aşiyan Museum stands as a testament to the power of art and literature. Its free admission makes it accessible to all. It’s a peaceful oasis offering breathtaking views of the Bosphorus. It’s a place to reflect on the lives and legacies of those who shaped Turkish culture. It’s a must-see destination for any visitor to Istanbul. The Aşiyan Museum. A true treasure.
