Did Miss Lake ever imagine her little school would thrive for nearly a century? Ashton House School, right here at 50-52 Eversley Crescent, has been shaping young minds since 1930. Miss Lake, the founder, lived nearby and initially taught most of the 60 pupils herself. Ashton House School wasn’t always this size. It started in a single building, number 52. A former student, M. Hursey, remembered Miss Lake cycling to school during lunch breaks. He also recalled Mrs. Short, who took over after Miss Lake retired, reading PE exercises from a book. Her hobble skirt, he noted, made demonstrations rather difficult. Mrs. Short led Ashton House School for 17 years before selling it to Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Turner in 1967. Interestingly, Mrs. Turner was a former pupil herself from the 1950s. As more families chose Ashton House School, the school expanded. The Turners bought the neighboring building, number 50. A hall was added in 1982. Over the next few decades, Ashton House School continued to evolve. New classrooms were built. Modern facilities were integrated while preserving the Victorian charm of the original buildings. Ashton House School is now run by Simon Turner, the son of the former owners. He, too, attended the school as a child, as did his own children. This family connection emphasizes the school’s warm, nurturing atmosphere. The current Head Teacher, Mr. Graeme Smith, is the ninth person to hold the position. Ashton House School continues to flourish. Enrollment holds steady at around 120-130 students. It’s not uncommon to find second or even third-generation families attending Ashton House School, a testament to its enduring appeal.
