Ashmole Academy started as the successor to Russell Lane Secondary Modern Boys’ School. In 1949, Russell Lane changed its name to Ashmole School. The name honors Elias Ashmole, a 17th-century antiquary and politician. Southaw School merged into Ashmole in 1971. Ashmole became a foundation school in 1999.
In 2002, Ashmole Academy gained specialist status in Science. Music became a second specialism in 2006. A new building opened on the same site in September 2004. It cost £14 million. The original administration block was updated. It reopened as the performing arts center in June 2005. Selling 38 acres of school grounds funded this project. The land was redeveloped for housing.
October 1, 2010, marked a significant milestone. Ashmole Academy became one of the first academies in North London. This conversion followed an invitation from the Coalition Government.
Ashmole Academy has consistently achieved high academic standards. In 2007, Ofsted rated the school as Grade 1 Outstanding. This is the highest possible assessment. The most recent inspection in 2021 resulted in a “Good” rating.
The academy boasts several notable buildings. A new Sixth Form Centre opened in 2014. It features a Starbucks café and a high-tech study center. Other alumni include footballer Mark Bunn and film producer Graham King. Dan Gillespie Sells, a musician, also attended Ashmole Academy. Andrew Symeou, an author, is another former pupil.
Today, Ashmole Academy continues to thrive under the leadership of Headteacher Balbinder Dhinsa. The school educates around 1,800 pupils. This includes 550 students in the sixth form.
In 2025, The Sunday Times Parent Power League Table ranked Ashmole Academy among the Top 400 Secondary Schools in the UK. It was named the 2nd highest riser nationally. The academy climbed 143 places to secure 193rd position.
