Have you ever wondered about the stories hidden beneath the sprawling green of Ashburton Park? Ashburton Park is a cherished green space in the heart of the Ashburton suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. The park holds a long and fascinating history, one that blends the stories of a neglected past with the vibrant present.
The park’s story starts with a donation, a generous act by a man named Michael Mornane. He gifted the land for St Michaels Parish School and sold off some of his sprawling estate that would later become a bustling community hub. This land was once part of the Ashburton Forest, a well-loved weekend picnic spot for Melbourne residents. The “Ashy Dasher,” a dedicated steam train, ferried eager day-trippers to the forest.
But the forest faced the encroaching hands of development, its green canopy slowly diminishing. In the 1920s, while Ashburton was beginning to boom, the park remained underutilized. A Park Management Committee eventually formed in 1933, with plans to revitalize the area, and the park began to see a transformation. Ashburton Park eventually received funding for a pavilion and toilet facilities, and its transformation was marked by the construction of a cricket pitch, cricket practice nets, and the introduction of organized football games.
The park’s transformation didn’t stop there. In 1945, local residents rallied together to establish a community kindergarten within the park’s grounds. This initiative led to another transformation, this time focused on children’s play, with a playground added to the park.
Today, Ashburton Park is a vibrant community hub. It’s home to the Ashburton Willows Cricket Club and the Ashburton United Soccer Club. It’s a place where children play, families gather, and the community thrives. Come visit, and see how Ashburton Park, once a neglected space, has evolved into a beloved heart of the Ashburton community.
