Did you know that Aschner Lipót, a key figure in Hungarian industrial history, is commemorated here? This is not just a sculpture. It is a tribute to a man who transformed the landscape of Hungarian industry. Let’s explore the legacy of the person memorialized by this Aschner Lipót Bust.

Aschner Lipót was born 150 years ago. He became the CEO of Tungsram Co. Tungsram was a world-renowned light bulb and radio tube factory. This statue of Aschner Lipót stands in Lipót Aschner Square in Újpest.

Aschner started his journey at Tungsram as a minor administrator. He quickly ascended through the ranks. He became chief clerk and then deputy director. By 1917, he was the technical manager. His leadership dramatically increased production. Soon, he was appointed CEO.

Under Aschner’s guidance, Tungsram modernized. It became a global leader in its field. Aschner initiated collaborations with General Electric. This collaboration facilitated shared technologies. It included licenses for incandescent lamps.

Aschner was also a founder of the Phoebus cartel. This was the first global industrial cartel. It sought to standardize the lifespan of light bulbs. It aimed to control global manufacturing and sales.

The story of Aschner Lipót takes a dark turn during World War II. Despite his contributions, Aschner was a Hungarian Jew. He was taken into “protective custody” in Vienna in March 1944. His villa was occupied by Adolf Eichmann. Eichmann oversaw the deportation of Hungarian Jews.

Aschner was transferred to Mauthausen concentration camp. Major Tungsram shareholders paid a ransom for his release. The ransom was 100,000 Swiss francs. Heinrich Himmler allegedly approved the exchange. Kurt Becher, an SS Officer, negotiated the deal.

In December 1944, Aschner received a Fremdenpass in Vienna. This allowed him to cross into Switzerland. The Hungarian Consulate in Geneva issued him a passport. This saved him from the Holocaust.

After the war, Aschner returned to Budapest. He became the vice-chairman of Tungsram. He served until his death in 1952.

The Aschner Lipót Bust stands as a reminder of his complex legacy. He was an industrial visionary. He was also a victim of a terrible period in history. His story reflects triumph and tragedy. It shows resilience and the impact of war. The bust invites us to remember Aschner’s contributions. It encourages us to reflect on the importance of preserving human dignity. This memorial serves as a powerful testament to a life that helped shape an industry. It is a tribute to a life threatened by the darkest forces of history.
