Opened in 1883 the Ascension, Balham Hill stands as a testament to faith. It also stands as a community. Arthur Cawston built it between 1883 and 1890. This construction addressed the growing population south of Clapham. The Ascension Church has seen many changes.

Ascension Balham as we know it is fairly recent. In 1993 members of St. Mark’s Battersea Rise joined the Ascension Balham congregation. About fifty members from each church came together. This created a new chapter for the Ascension.

Reverend Marcus Gibbs became the vicar in September 2013. His leadership continues to guide the church. The Ascension seeks to spread the love of God. Whoever you are you are welcome here. Whatever you believe you are welcome.

The church building itself has interesting features. It was constructed in the late 19th century. South transepts were added during construction. The interior showcases slender octagonal piers. These piers lack capitals and add a unique touch. Large transepts and a narrow east aisle define the space.

The Ascension has been reordered. This provides a central worship area. The original sanctuary is still maintained. This blend of old and new creates a special atmosphere.

The Ascension offers various services. Christenings and baptisms can be arranged. Weddings and funerals find a place of solace here. The hall is also available for Saturday hire. These services cater to the community’s diverse needs. The building provides step-free facilities. A disabled toilet ensures accessibility for all.

The Ascension offers more than just traditional services. Bubble Church is a puppet-packed service. It is designed for babies toddlers and young families. Sunday Worship includes engaging kids’ groups. Midday Prayers take place on weekdays at noon. One Wednesday a month features Communion and Coffee.

Special events add to the church’s vibrant life. There are events such as Kids Pancake Parties. Bouncy Castle Week provides fun for children. These events create a sense of togetherness.

The Ascension’s mission is clear. They aim to spread God’s love. They extend this love to Balham and beyond. The Ministry Team includes several dedicated individuals. Rev Marcus Gibbs Rev Dorothy Pennicooke Rev Luke Steven and Rev Cara Gibbs are among them. They work together to serve the community.

Today the Ascension is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living growing community. It welcomes people from all walks of life. It embraces diversity and celebrates individuality. The Ascension continues to evolve. It remains a beacon of hope and love in Balham.
