Before you stands the Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church Plaque. It’s a testament to a church’s incredible journey. A journey from near closure to vibrant growth.

Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church was organized in 1909. Its cornerstone was laid in 1921. A large Education Building was added in 1954. The church flourished in the 1950s and 60s. However radical changes hit in the 1970s and 80s. By 1990 only about twenty-five people attended. Their average age was eighty. The church faced closure.

Then in 1993 a transformation began. Asbury embraced inclusiveness. The church emphasized the fine arts and the positive message of Jesus Christ. Word spread. Attendance and programs grew. They continue to grow today. This plaque commemorates the unwavering faith of those who kept Asbury’s doors open.

Pastor Billy Hester played a pivotal role. A former actor he transitioned to ministry. He served at Marble Collegiate Church in New York City. He later led Asbury Memorial. His wife Cheri an actress and dance instructor also contributed significantly. They worked tirelessly to revitalize the church. They even faced a broken air conditioner. This incident prompted a realization. The small choir room was overflowing. The church was growing!

In September 2020 Asbury Memorial Church disaffiliated from the United Methodist denomination. This was due to disagreements over LGBTQ+ inclusiveness and same-sex marriage. It became an independent non-denominational church. It maintains the Wesleyan tradition. The 11:15 am service time remains a quirky detail. It reflects the need to serve two churches initially. This historical marker highlights not just a building but the enduring spirit of faith and community. It’s a story of revival. It’s a reminder that even when facing closure hope prevails.
