“Can these faded words truly encapsulate decades of history?”, you might wonder as you stand before the Fidelity Schools Plaque. This unassuming marker, erected by the Texas Historical Commission in 2008, commemorates a legacy much larger than itself – the Fidelity Schools of Galena Park. Before integration in 1970, the Fidelity Schools, comprising Fidelity Manor High School and Fidelity Manor Elementary School, served as the sole beacon of education for African American children in the area. Founded in a time of segregation, the Fidelity Schools represented more than just access to education. They were a source of immense pride, a testament to the community’s resilience, and a springboard for future generations. The plaque tells a tale of academic excellence, sporting triumphs, and most importantly, the unwavering spirit of a community determined to provide its children with the best possible education, even in the face of adversity. While the original school buildings were sadly demolished in 1986, the Fidelity Schools Plaque ensures that their legacy, and the stories they represent, will never be forgotten.
