Hiroshima’s Asaminami Ward, a tapestry woven from ancient villages, holds a story as rich and deep as the delta it sits upon. Today, Asaminami is a thriving ward in Hiroshima City. But did you know it wasn’t always part of the city? Asaminami Ward’s roots stretch back to the Edo period. Back then, it was a collection of over 35 villages and towns that sprung up thanks to land reclamation projects south of Hiroshima Castle. These settlements thrived, their combined population even surpassing that of the samurai and temple residents within Hiroshima Castle’s walls. This growth wasn’t a sudden boom. It was a gradual process, mirroring the steady accumulation of earth and sand carried by the Ota River that eventually formed the delta on which Asaminami stands today. Then, in 1871, came a pivotal shift. The traditional Japanese feudal system was abolished, and prefectures were established. The area that encompassed what is now Asaminami became a key part of the newly formed Hiroshima Prefecture. This change marked the beginning of Asaminami’s journey towards becoming the integral part of Hiroshima City that it is today. The true transformation began in 1971. A series of mergers saw numerous towns and villages, each with its own unique history and character, brought together under the banner of Asaminami Ward. This wasn’t merely an administrative change; it was the unification of a community. Even today, the echoes of Asaminami’s past resonate through its modern streets.
