As Três Graças, meaning “The Three Graces,” were created by Portuguese artist Fernando Fernandes. The sculpture was originally placed here in 1973. Later, during the construction of an underground car park, As Três Graças were temporarily removed. Following cleaning and restoration, the sculpture returned to Praça de Londres in December 2008. Sadly, time and perhaps some unintended interactions have left their mark. Some noses and hands now bear the scars of minor damage. The sculptor, Fernando Fernandes (1924-1992), was born in Braga and pursued his artistic studies in Porto, Paris, and London. His As Três Graças showcase his skill in capturing the energy and grace of the human form.
