Could a mosque hold the echoes of a battle fought far from its minarets? As Syuhada, here in Jakarta, seems to whisper just that. It’s a relatively modern mosque, its clean lines and multi-level structure a testament to contemporary design. Yet, its name, As Syuhada, meaning “the martyrs,” links it to a pivotal moment in Indonesian history, a battle that took place not in Jakarta, but in Yogyakarta. The story begins in 1945, shortly after Indonesia declared its independence. In Yogyakarta, a fierce battle erupted in Kotabaru between Indonesian nationalists and Japanese forces still present in the country. Twenty-one Indonesians fell in that struggle, their sacrifice marking a critical point in the fight for true freedom. To honor these fallen heroes, or Syuhada, community leaders conceived the idea of a memorial mosque. The land, donated by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX, lay near the Kali Code river, between the Kridonggo and Gondolayu bridges. Construction began in 1950, with the first stone laid on Idul Adha, a symbolic gesture of sacrifice and remembrance. The design, a collaborative effort by committee members, blended modern and traditional elements. The three-tiered structure, perhaps unintentionally, mirrored the layout of Borobudur Temple, representing the spiritual journey from the earthly realm to enlightenment. As Syuhada opened its doors in 1952, inaugurated by President Sukarno himself. The mosque, however, is more than just a place of worship; it’s a living monument. Its very architecture is imbued with symbolism. Seventeen steps lead to the entrance, eight sides grace the pillars, and four lower domes rise to meet a fifth above. These numbers, 17-8-45, echo Indonesia’s Independence Day, a subtle yet powerful reminder of the nation’s hard-won freedom. Inside, twenty windows illuminate the ground floor lecture hall, symbolizing the twenty attributes of Allah. Two pillars on the second floor, designated for women’s prayers, represent the duality of human intention. Five air vents punctuate the mihrab on the main prayer floor, a nod to the five pillars of Islam. While As Syuhada stands in Jakarta, its spirit remains connected to the sacrifice made in Yogyakarta. It reminds us that remembrance can take many forms, and that even the most modern of structures can hold the echoes of the past.
