The Black Plague swept across Europe. It caused immense suffering and death. It killed 30 to 60 percent of Europe’s total population. Buda was struck in 1691 and again in 1709. Many victims were buried in mass graves. People believed erecting a column would ward off the plague. The foundation stone was laid in 1700.

The first pillar of the Árvízi oszlop Column was ready by 1706. The plague returned to Budapest three years later. A new larger plague pillar was planned. It was meant to keep the plague away at any cost. Residents believed the Holy Trinity Statue did its job. The plague never returned after 1709.

Ceresola Vereio and Bernát Ferretti made the original statue. It was finished in 1706. In 1709 the original column was removed. The Council of Buda decided to erect a much bigger more impressive Holy Trinity Column. Fulop Ungleich sculpted the column that you can see today.

The carving on top of the Árvízi oszlop Column represents the Holy Trinity. The column is decorated with smaller statues. These depict angels cherub-like figures and larger statues of saints. A central sculpture exhibits a biblical scene. It shows King David praying to God. He asked God to let his people avoid the outbreak of plague.

The Árvízi oszlop Column or Holy Trinity Statue is in the middle of Trinity Square. It is near Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. Trinity Square is a perfect meeting place. The Trinity column was built between 1710 and 1713. Philipp Ungleich designed it in Baroque style. The column was built to celebrate the end of the plague. Citizens hoped it would protect them from another epidemic. The sculpture at the top represents the Holy Trinity. It sits on a sturdy pillar. The pillar is decorated with statues of little angels. Large statues of saints adorn the base. The column rests on a large pedestal. The pedestal is adorned with bas-reliefs and the Hungarian crest.
