“This mosque seems older than it is” whispered a man to his friend. He squinted at the columns of Arvallı Camii. He was right. Arvallı Camii might have been built in 1570. But it features architectural elements that are much older. The mosque beautifully incorporates Seljuk calligraphy. This hints at the rich artistic traditions that influenced its design. The builders of Arvallı Camii ingeniously repurposed materials from earlier structures. This practice known as “spolia” was common in Anatolian Turkish-Islamic architecture. The most striking examples of this can be seen in the columns behind the last congregation place. These columns capped with Corinthian capitals stand as silent witnesses to Antalya’s layered past. The mosque’s history is further enriched by a case of mistaken identity. For years it was believed to have been commissioned by Kuyucu Murat Pasha. This was based on accounts in Evliya Çelebi’s Seyahatname. However recent scholarship suggests a different patron. The honor belongs to Karaman Beyi Murat Pasha a contemporary of Kuyucu Murat Pasha. Arvallı Camii stands as a testament to the architectural ingenuity and cultural fusion that define Antalya’s heritage.
