Seven islands. That’s how Jurong Island began. Jurong Island wasn’t always the industrial powerhouse we see today. In the 1980s Singapore’s government had a vision. They needed a major chemical logistics hub. A hub to serve the booming petrochemical industry. So they embarked on a massive undertaking. They joined seven smaller islands together through land reclamation. This created Jurong Island the heart of Singapore’s chemical and energy industry.
The transformation of Jurong Island was a monumental effort. It wasn’t just about connecting islands. It involved meticulous planning and huge investments. Over $50 billion was poured into this project. The result? Jurong Island is now home to over 100 international companies. Companies such as Shell Chevron and ExxonMobil. These giants of the industry operate on this single island.
But Jurong Island isn’t just about industry. Hidden deep beneath its surface lies another marvel. 150 meters below ground lies the Jurong Rock Caverns. This underground facility is a sight to behold. It stores millions of cubic meters of liquid hydrocarbons. Crude oil naphtha condensate and gas oil are just some of the materials stored within. This incredible structure is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. Imagine a network of tunnels spanning 8 kilometers. A network that holds the equivalent of 600 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Sadly Jurong Island and its Jurong Rock Caverns are not open to the public. Security is tight. Only those with special passes are permitted entry. So while we can’t explore Jurong Island firsthand we can certainly appreciate its importance. Its significance to Singapore’s economy and its unique story. Jurong Island proves that even small city-states can become global players. They achieve this by innovative engineering and strategic planning.
Jurong Island’s story is one of ambition innovation and remarkable achievement. It’s a testament to human ingenuity. A feat of engineering that transformed a collection of small islands into an industrial marvel. A place that quietly contributes greatly to Singapore’s success on the global stage.
