Ever wondered where a planter named Arthur enjoyed his daily dose of Kandy’s beauty? You are standing at Arthur’s Seat. This is a high observation deck. It is located on Rajapihilla Mawatha in Kandy. Arthur’s Seat offers a panoramic vista.

Arthur’s Seat got its name during the British period from 1815 to 1948. Legend says a planter named Arthur owned a bungalow nearby. He would sit on a stone seat under a tree. From there Arthur would gaze over Kandy City. The bungalow is now a private home. But Arthur’s viewing spot remains.

Arthur’s Seat is about 574 meters above sea level. From here you can see Nuwara Wewa. You also have a view of the Temple of the Tooth Relic and the Royal Palace. The city center sprawls beneath you.

This viewpoint belongs to the Kandy Municipal Council. It sits 0.650 km from West Point on the road. The slope is steep. It inclines at about 30 degrees towards Nuwara Wewa.

Arthur’s Seat isn’t just a pretty view. It is a convenient place to take mind-blowing photographs. The panoramic view makes for a striking backdrop. The colors and the hustle and bustle create a vibrant scene. The overall beauty of this place is definitely worth a visit.

Parking is limited near Arthur’s Seat. Sometimes you might have to park a little further away.

From Arthur’s Seat you can see the Temple of the Tooth Relic. It also offers a view of Kandy Lake. The Bahirawa Kanda is visible as well. But many say the view from Bahirawa Kanda is better.

Nearby are some restaurants and souvenir shops. You can relax and enjoy the surroundings. You can also buy Sri Lankan souvenirs.

The Temple of the Tooth was built by King Wimaladharmasuriya I. He reigned from 1592 to 1604 AD. It was built to house the Tooth Relic of the Supreme Buddha.

Kandy was named a World Heritage Site because of the Temple of the Tooth. Other temples add historical value to Kandy. These include Gadaladeniya Temple and Lankathilaka Temple.

So, as you stand here at Arthur’s Seat remember Arthur. Remember his stone seat. Remember the history that unfolds before you. Take in the view. Capture the moment. Let the beauty of Kandy sink in.
