Was it possible for a house to be ahead of its time? Here, before us stands the Arthur B. Heurtley House, a testament to that very idea. Designed by the visionary architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1902, the Arthur B. Heurtley House is considered a pioneering example of the Prairie style. Wright’s signature is all over this home, from the emphasis on horizontal lines to the low-pitched roof with its broad eaves. He truly wanted to blend the structure with the prairie landscape. What’s fascinating is that Wright reversed the typical floor plan in the Arthur B. Heurtley House. He placed the living and dining areas on the second floor, almost as if he wanted to elevate the experience, to offer a better view. The home was designed for Arthur B. Heurtley, one of Wright’s more affluent clients. It saw a period where it was even a duplex, owned and lived in by Wright’s sister, Jane Porter, and her husband. Today, though privately owned and not open for tours, the Arthur B. Heurtley House stands as a reminder of Wright’s genius, preserved for future generations to admire.
