Deep beneath the bustling city of Marseille, where the Boulevard National stretches towards the horizon, lies a hidden gem: the Art Tunnel. Two kilometers from the Vieux-Port, the Art Tunnel serves as both a gateway and a connection, linking Marseille’s 3rd arrondissement to the rest of the city. This passage beneath the railway lines isn’t just a tunnel. It’s a canvas, a sanctuary, a place where the hopes and fears of Marseille’s residents are etched onto the walls. The railway acts as a barrier, separating the Haussmann-era architecture of Longchamp from the grittier Boulevard National. Every day, countless pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers pass through this space. For some, it’s a source of anxiety or unease. For others, it’s a portal to another world, a place of contemplation and wonder. The Art Tunnel evokes a spectrum of images, from the Grotto of Lourdes to Plato’s Cave. In 2013, when Marseille was designated the European Capital of Culture, artists Maryvonne Arnaud and Philippe Mouillon recognized the potential of this unique urban space. They saw an opportunity to create a dramatic urban experience, a space where social and generational differences could intersect. Like many natural caves transformed into sanctuaries, the Art Tunnel became a repository for contemporary ex-votos. These expressions of hope and fear, collected from passersby, transcend local traditions and cultural boundaries, forming a poetic tapestry of words and emotions. Each wish is a dedication, a personal offering shared with the city, with loved ones, and with strangers. They reveal the anxieties, dreams, and uncertainties of modern life: “I’d like to breathe underwater,” one wish reads. Another: “I want a normal life, like everyone else.” These poignant desires, etched onto the walls of the Art Tunnel, offer a glimpse into the hearts of Marseille’s people. The Art Tunnel is a living testament to the power of art to transform public spaces. In 2023, a street art project further enhanced the tunnel’s artistic landscape. Seven artists, selected from over 150 applicants, contributed their talents to revitalize this once-dark passage. Artists like Scaf, ABYS, and Nyota Muganza spent three weeks and nearly 140 hours transforming the tunnel into a vibrant display of contemporary art. The Art Tunnel stands as a symbol of Marseille’s creative spirit, a place where art and urban life converge, creating a truly unforgettable experience.
