Didn’t it used to be public baths here? Now, we stand before Art-cade*, a vibrant contemporary art space in Marseille. Art-cade* has a story as unique as the art it displays.

Let’s delve into the history of Art-cade*. It was founded in 1992 by artists Anne-Marie Pécheur and Jean-Baptiste Audat. They transformed former public baths in La Plaine into this gallery. These baths were renovated through community projects. It shows how art can breathe new life into forgotten spaces.

Art-cade* champions contemporary art and architecture. In 2009, architect Guillaume Calas joined Art-cade*. He created Archist, a blend of art and architecture. Archist puts on exhibitions, workshops, and urban tours each year. Art-cade* is not just a gallery. It is a hub for creativity and collaboration.

Since 2010, Art-cade* has hosted several organizations. Image Clé, Otto-prod, and DDA are among them. The gallery fosters cooperation and shares resources. It is a platform for diverse artistic voices.

Each year, Art-cade* presents five to six exhibitions. These showcase national and international artists. There is always a focus on emerging talent. But Art-cade* is more than just exhibitions. It is a place for readings, music, fashion events, and debates. It welcomes all forms of artistic expression.

Art-cade* is committed to reaching a wide audience. They organize guided tours and creative workshops. These are designed for schools and social centers. Art-cade* welcomes around 2,000 children each year for tours and workshops. Over 10,000 visitors pass through its doors annually.

The association functions with an annual budget of 160,000 euros. It receives support from the City of Marseille. Funding also comes from the Région Sud, and the Département des Bouches du Rhône. Drac PACA also supports Art-cade*.

Jean-Baptiste Audat began cultural projects in French-speaking Africa in 1984. He worked with an NGO, ENDA tiers-monde. This work inspired him to found Art-cade* in Marseille. He wanted to mobilize artists for North-South collaborations.

Anne-Marie Pécheur was appointed to the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille. Together, they acquired the dilapidated public baths in 1993. Over 15 years, they restored the building. They ran summer projects and reintegration programs.

Art-cade* has had several presidents and exhibition curators. François Bazzoli was the first curator. Rémy Fenzy focused on contemporary aspects. Philippe Cyroulnik brought a perspective closer to the founders’ vision.

Art-cade* is more than just a gallery. It is a space where art meets architecture. It is a place where emerging artists find their voice. Art-cade* is a testament to the power of art. It brings people together. It transforms spaces. It enriches the cultural landscape of Marseille.
