High above the Bornholm landscape sits Aarsballe. A crossroads village it was. A natural meeting point for horse-drawn traffic. Imagine the clatter of hooves on cobblestones. The rhythmic creak of wheels.

Aarsballe developed around the farms of Aarsballegård and Træbenegård. These farms were the heart of the early community. They witnessed the slow growth of Aarsballe. Aarsballe’s strategic location at the crossroads was key. It connected Rønne to Østerlars and Aakirkeby to Klemensker. This made it a vital hub for trade and transport.

Over time Aarsballe flourished. A windmill was built near Træbenegård in the late 1800s. A blacksmith followed. A general store opened in the early 1900s. It even became the largest store on the island. Sadly many businesses closed later. Opportunities grew elsewhere.

Aarsballe’s high elevation proved advantageous. In 1955 a 125-meter tall FM transmitter was erected. In 1996 a 316-meter TV2 mast joined it. The TV2 mast’s peak sits 432 meters above sea level. This makes it the highest point in Denmark.

Aarsballe today boasts stunning views. You can see the Nyker Plantage and Almindingen forests. Its unique past. Its important role in Bornholm’s history. It is a fascinating glimpse into Bornholm’s past. The village remains a special place. A quiet testament to Bornholm’s enduring spirit. A place where history and nature meet. Aarsballe is more than just a crossroads. It’s a story waiting to be discovered.
