Whose silent grave lies beneath these waves? A tragic tale unfolded here, the story of the Fu Shan Hai. In 2003, the Fu Shan Hai, a massive Chinese bulk carrier, met its demise in these very waters. Imagine a ship stretching over two hundred meters long, carrying a mountain of fertilizer from Latvia. On a seemingly ordinary day, the Fu Shan Hai encountered the Polish container ship, Gdynia. A series of miscommunications and misjudgments led to a catastrophic collision. The Gdynia’s bow pierced the Fu Shan Hai’s port side, sealing the fate of the Chinese vessel. Despite desperate attempts to save the ship, the Fu Shan Hai sank beneath the waves, finding its final resting place 69 meters below. This event marked the largest ship to ever sink in the Baltic Sea. While the physical ship may be gone, the memory of the Fu Shan Hai and the lessons learned from its tragic end continue to echo in these waters.
