Have you ever felt the cool rush of a mountain stream? Welcome to Arroyo Ñireco in Bariloche. This isn’t just any stream. It’s a living piece of history.

Arroyo Ñireco flows from the eastern slope of Cerro Ventana. It eventually empties into the stunning Lago Nahuel Huapi. Its name is ancient. It was already known by that name when Argentine troops arrived during the second phase of the Conquest of the Desert in 1883. Military records from February 23 1883 even mention it. Jorge Rohde a military leader noted the stream’s abundance of ñire trees.

The name itself is a fascinating blend of languages. According to the expert Juan Martín Biedma the word Ñireco combines the Mapuche words ñire or ñire a type of tree and co meaning water. This translates to “water of the ñire” or “water of the ñires”. Biedma used old Spanish-Mapuche dictionaries for his research. He noted that these hardy ñire trees form dense thickets. These provide shelter for foxes from harsh winter weather. Other interpretations suggest ñire derives from neren meaning “to weave”. This refers to how the branches intertwine.

The Arroyo Ñireco has been spelled in countless ways throughout history. Maps from 1898 to 1940 show variations like Ñirrecó Ñirico Ñiricó and Ñirico. This reflects the evolution of written language and understanding.

More than just a waterway Arroyo Ñireco holds a special place in the hearts of Bariloche’s adventurers. In 1945 the Club Andino built a refuge near its source. This was at a strategic altitude of 1570 meters. The refuge was ideal for winter sports and mountaineering. Its location was near the peaks of Cerro Ventana Cerro Ñireco Cerro Meta and Cerro Pontoneros. A downhill ski race was held near the refuge. It ran from 1945 to 1950.

Today Arroyo Ñireco faces challenges. Low water levels due to drought impact water supply. Pollution from garbage and runoff also threatens its health. Local communities are working hard to protect and restore this precious waterway. They seek to make it a protected area balancing preservation with recreational use. Their vision is to transform Arroyo Ñireco into a place for everyone to enjoy and respect. A place where history and nature intertwine. So remember the Arroyo Ñireco’s rich past as you stand here today. Let’s all work to preserve its future.
