What if I told you a Rio de Janeiro waterway is also called Arroio Fundo? This isn’t just any stream. Arroio Fundo a three-kilometer-long watercourse flows from the Linha Amarela viaduct’s end all the way to Jacarepaguá Lagoon. It’s actually a continuation of the Grande River born in Pedra Branca State Park. Think of it as a vital artery for the region.

Arroio Fundo plays a crucial role in Rio’s ecosystem. Sadly it also receives sewage illegally dumped from Cidade de Deus and Jacarepaguá. This pollution is a serious challenge. Fortunately Rio has been working to address the problem.

In 2010 a significant step was taken. The Arroio Fundo Water Treatment Unit opened. This was part of the Olympic Games’ environmental commitments. It aimed to improve the lagoon complex’s sanitation and overall health. This important project is one of five such units in Rio. The others are in Rio Carioca Piscinão de Ramos Rocinha and Guaratiba.

The Arroio Fundo’s name itself is interesting. The combination of “rio” and “arroio” is technically a pleonasm. Both mean waterway. However as a proper name it’s accepted both socially and legally.

Arroio Fundo’s story is a microcosm of Rio’s environmental journey. A fight against pollution. A commitment to cleaning up and protecting its natural beauty. A story of resilience. A testament to the city’s ongoing efforts to balance urban growth with environmental sustainability.
