Her father King Ladislaus I died when she was seven. Piroska was left an orphan under the guardianship of her uncle King Coloman.
Years passed. Piroska grew into a woman of grace and beauty. A marriage was arranged a diplomatic maneuver to strengthen ties between Hungary and the Byzantine Empire. In 1104 Piroska married John II Komnenos the future emperor of Byzantium.
Constantinople. A city of glittering mosaics and towering spires welcomed her. She converted to Eastern Orthodoxy taking the name Irene. Irene a name that echoed piety and wisdom.
Irene and John had eight children. Among them was Manuel I Komnenos a future emperor himself. Irene is credited with founding the Pancrotator monastery in Constantinople a testament to her piety. She was deeply involved in charitable work. She aided the poor and the sick. Her compassion extended beyond Byzantium to her homeland of Hungary. She often acted as a mediator between the two empires.
