Flowing into the Big Muddy Creek Estuary is Armour Stream. This small stream is located just north of Armour Bay. Armour Stream might seem like just another waterway. But it plays a vital role in the local ecosystem.

Big Muddy Creek, which Armour Stream feeds into, has a rich history itself. The creek was traditionally called Paruroa by Tāmaki Māori. Paruroa means wide mud. This shares a meaning with the English name. Big Muddy Creek was important to Te Kawerau ā Maki. They are the mana whenua of the area. It was a place where pātiki or flounder could be netted.
Two Te Kawerau ā Maki kāinga existed near Big Muddy Creek. Nihotupu was at Armour Bay. Ngāmoko was near the Lower Nihotupu Dam. These villages highlight the historical significance of the area.
The battle of Te-Rangi-hinganga-tahi occurred at Big Muddy Creek around 1741. The Te Taoū hapū of Ngāti Whātua fought Waiohua. Kiwi Tāmaki was defeated. Many died fleeing the battle. Te Kawerau ā Maki remained in the area until 1825. The Musket Wars forced them to flee. Many returned in 1836. They re-established a kāinga at Te Henga or Bethells Beach. Land at Big Muddy Creek was sold to Europeans without their knowledge.
From the 1830s to the 1920s kauri trees were felled. European settlers used them for the logging industry. The coastal community of Parau developed on the western shores of Big Muddy Creek. In the late 19th century the creek was sometimes called Mangrove Creek. Armour Stream contributes to the overall ecosystem of this area.
In the early 20th century the creek was dammed. Timber and later concrete structures were used. The Lower Nihotupu Dam was constructed in 1948.
Big Muddy Creek’s geology is also interesting. Tectonic forces uplifted the Waitākere Ranges and subsided the Manukau Harbour. This happened between 3 and 5 million years ago. Big Muddy Creek is likely part of a fault-line. After the Last Glacial Maximum sea levels rose. The river mouths of West Auckland flooded. Huia, Big Muddy Creek and Little Muddy Creek became tidal mudflats.
