Gazing across the striking metallic lines of Arken, do you sense a ship run aground? Arken, meaning “The Ark” in Danish, isn’t a random name. The building’s architect, a young Søren Robert Lund, designed it to resemble a ship, half-buried in the sand. Arken Museum of Modern Art opened in 1996, a brainchild of Queen Margrethe. Located in Ishøj, near Copenhagen, it quickly became a significant cultural landmark. Arken holds over 400 pieces of post-war art, including international and Scandinavian works. Originally intended to sit directly on the beach, environmental concerns shifted its location. This resulted in Arken being further inland. This “ship” now sits on a man-made island surrounded by a lagoon, accessible by bridges. This “Art Island” enhances the maritime theme. Inside, you’ll discover a vast collection, reflecting the complexities of the modern human condition. Arken houses works by prominent artists, including Damien Hirst, Olafur Eliasson, and Ai Weiwei. It also holds a significant collection of works by Anselm Reyle and one of Europe’s largest collections of Damien Hirst’s art. The museum has seen two major expansions. The first in 2009 increased the gallery space by 50%, thanks in part to a generous donation to the Annie and Otto Johs. Detlefs Foundation. This allowed Arken to display large-scale installations like those from the thought-provoking UTOPIA Project. The second expansion in 2016 further solidified the Art Island concept, creating the unique maritime landscape you see today. Arken Museum of Modern Art is more than just a museum.
