Picture this. You’re standing before Argo Community High School. A magnificent structure it is. Established in 1920 this school has witnessed generations of students. It stands proudly in Summit Illinois a western suburb of Chicago.

Argo Community High School is more than just a building. It’s a cornerstone of the community. The school draws students from several surrounding towns. These include Summit Bedford Park Bridgeview Justice Willow Springs and part of Hickory Hills. The name itself has an interesting origin. It’s named after a nearby corn processing plant. This plant manufactured Argo corn starch. It’s now owned by Ingredion.

Argo has a rich history. This includes both triumphs and challenges. In 2014 and 2016 Argo earned a bronze medal. This was for academic performance from U S News & World Report. It was the only South Suburban Conference school to receive this honor. However the school’s history isn’t without its struggles. In 1968 a race riot took place at Argo. Yolande Robbins played a vital role in healing the divide. Sadly she was later unjustly dismissed from her position.

The school boasts a vibrant student life. Numerous clubs and activities exist. These range from academic clubs like the National Honor Society to creative pursuits such as the drama club and the yearbook Argolite. Argo’s athletic program is also noteworthy. The Argonauts compete in the South Suburban Conference. They participate in IHSA state championship series. School colors are maroon and white.

Argo has produced notable alumni. These include athletes like Bob Bercich a former NFL safety and Ted Kluszewski a renowned MLB first baseman. The school also counts among its graduates prominent figures in other fields. These include Bill Damaschke an animator and producer and Milan Mrksich a leading researcher at Northwestern University. Perhaps most significantly Argo was attended by Mamie Till mother of Emmett Till. Emmett’s murder was a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement.

Argo Community High School is a place where history education and community spirit intertwine. It’s a testament to the enduring power of education. It’s a place where countless students have learned grown and made their mark on the world. As you leave today remember this school’s legacy. It’s a legacy of both achievement and resilience. A legacy that continues to shape the future.
